- Short - The sale of a borrowed security, commodity or currency with the expectation that the asset will fall in value. It's exactly opposite from the common concept of trading, to "Buy" into a stock because you think it is going to go up; you instead "Sell short" into a stock because you think it is going to go lower. If you don't know how to short, flip your monitor upside down and you will realize the concept is quite simple.
- Short interest - The total number of shares of a security that have been sold short by customers and securities firms.
- Days to cover aka Short-interest Ratio - A measurement of a company's issued shares that are currently shorted, expressed as the number of days required to close out all of the short positions. The longer the days to cover, the more pronounced a stock movement effect can be.
- Float - The total number of shares publicly owned and available for trading. The float is calculated by subtracting restricted shares from outstanding shares.
- Beta - A measure of the volatility, or systematic risk, of a security or a portfolio in comparison to the market as a whole.
